The sudden outbreak of COVID this year has delayed the editing work of ECNUAS READs. Regardless all setbacks, the school is definitely determined to continue this good tradition of professional learning. So, when I opened the manuscript of “ECNUAS READS 2021” sent by the director of library, Ms. Chen Hui, I was quite excited. Finally, we are very close to the finish line!
COVID epidemic in Shanghai began to break out again in mid-March this year. Since the beginning of April, the city has been basically in a state of closure and control, and it has been more than one month since the citizens were told to stay at home or move with restrictions. Although I worked online from home, the work of the school still kept me quite busy. I didn’t have time to read the final complete manuscript. Finally, it is the Labours’ Day holidays, I can have more free time to delve into each teacher's book review again.
The idea that emerged at a school-wide teacher professional development event is finally coming to fruition this year again. The beginning of everything is difficult. The publication of “ECNUAS READS 2020” took the hard work of many colleagues for several months. A lot of editing and proofreading were finished in evenings and during holidays. I believe that when teachers saw their reading commentaries be presented in such a formal form, they must be very excited. Meanwhile, reading as a very important way for our teachers to grow was well documented in this way. These outcomes made all the effort well worth it.
As in the first edition, after receiving the draft book reviews from teachers, I first organized the principals of school divisions and the Academic Committee to conduct preliminary reading, sorting and selection of each text. Then the director of the library, Ms. Chen Hui, led her team to read, edit and categorize each review carefully again, and contacted the publisher for layout and cover design. “ECNUAS READs 2021” and the 84 reviews in it are the final product of the above processes.
According to the specific content of the book reviews, the teachers' works are roughly divided into five categories: Education, Teaching, Management, Curriculum and Others. Most of the reviews belong to education and teaching, this reflects that teachers focus on learning and reflection on issues that are closely related to their daily work. Although those under the category of Other are not directly related to school education and teaching, they are related to teachers' personal reading interest and self-improvement, so they are also included. The bibliography chosen by the teachers includes works from the ancient to the modern time and from the east to the west. The selected books include classics and practical guides, the authors include famous educators and practitioners working on the frontier of education. In the light of their own life and work experience, teachers interpret and share the theories, practices, or stories in the books from unique perspectives. It can be said that this edition is to present a colorful spiritual feast for readers.
我也看到几个在学校教师专业发展活动中突出几个领域,比如UDL(面向所有学生学习的全面课程设计)和CLIL(内容和语言和内容融合的教学法),有老师找到相关著作进行深入研究和评论。
We are also pleased to note some connections between the reading lists of teachers this year and last year's school work and teachers' professional learning. For example, some books were reviewed by other teachers in “ECNUAS READS 2020”, and this year some teachers were influenced and went to read these books. The book Positive Discipline that I recommended to the school management team is a very popular book with both theoretical and practical guidance. Last year, many teachers read and commented on this book, several teachers also commented on it this year. I also saw several terms highlighted in professional development activities in schools last year, such as UDL (Universal Design for Learning) and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). Teachers found relevant publications and made careful research and reviews.
In the process of formulating and implementing the all-staff mentoring system in primary and secondary schools, the project team recommended a book "High School Career Planning Guidance under the New College Entrance Examination Mode", which I also see in this edition. When I read teachers' reviews on the books I have read, such as "A Brief History of the Future of Education," I immediately felt connected with those teachers. I believe this is also the wonderful feeling of other teachers when they read "ECNUAS READS" from their own colleagues. What makes me happiest is that I see the book "Meeting – Big Mountain, Small Love" written by an ECNUAS high school student be favored and reviewed by one of our teachers. All of these exciting findings show a good example of our school's character as a Learning Community.
Reading and writing have long been an important ingredient of our learning community, which not only includes teachers but also students and parents. For example, in the high school, there is a student-initiated "Guangchen Reading Club", whose public account of the same name often publishes comments or thoughts written by students on the basis of reading in and out of class. The official account of "Firefly Window, LIGHT" initiated by the school's parent committee constantly recommends excellent books to students and parents, and publishes some reading commentaries of students. The school library also regularly recommends books related to education, teaching and learning to teachers and students, and the annual publication of "ECNUAS READS" provides another way for teachers, staff and administrators in the school with book recommendations. On the other hand, the ECNUAS READS also constantly urges us all to keep learning. Reading is an essential task of a teacher and it is a reward and enjoyment that naturally comes with the profession.
