Opening speech, April 27, 2020, for G9 and G12

Good morning G9 and G12 students,

Welcome back!

I believe each of you must have missed the school, missed your classrooms, missed your friends, missed your teachers. It has been more than 3 months we haven’t been in this place and haven’t seen each other face-to-face. It must be very hard for everybody, including all of our students and teachers during this extraordinary time due to the outbreak of COVID-19. We don’t get used to this kind of social distancing or social isolation. Our human are social beings, we love to be connected with others and love to share our thoughts, feelings, and even belongings with others.

Now luckily, we are slowly getting back to our normal lives. I think we should feel gratitude. We should deeply appreciate what the country, the municipal government, all the people including the doctors and nurses and of course your parents, have done to protect us and our society. All the governments, organizations, and people including yourself have been combatting the virus ferociously in the past few months.

We should also appreciate what our school and our teachers have been doing for us since the beginning of the virus outbreak. For example, Homeroom teachers have been contacting you, checking and reporting your health daily, all teachers swiftly changed to the mode of online teaching from the first day of this semester and make sure your learning isn’t impacted too much, the school makes sure online teaching is well managed in general and of good quality and ensures the school is safe to be re-opened to students. Probably DP2 students should feel special gratitude to your teachers because all the work they did to help everyone complete all DP assessment requirements in time.

Students, This battle isn’t finished yet, both within China and outside the country. So while we celebrate our rejoining in the school, everyone in this community should also be vigilant towards any possible risks against us. In the next one hour or so, our in-house doctor, Dr. Cara Hu will give us a training about how to live and study in the campus after the virus outbreak. Homeroom teachers will show you a video and talk with you about how to protect yourself against COVID-19. I beg you please listen carefully and then follow their instructions in the days to come. In so doing, we will not only protect ourselves but also this school community.

I believe we will love our community, enjoy our school life, cherish each other more than ever after we experience all the difficulties in the past a few months in the face of our common enemy COVID-19. Your study will continue, Our Life will continue, the joy and love that is always with us will continue too.

I wish you all the best!
